Week 10: Big Data - Option 1

In this week’s readings Bryant et al. (2008) see the world as being “data driven” while Bollier (2010) discusses “the promise and perils” of using Big Data for “Nowcasting”. How do you think the use of data should be managed so the promise outweighs the perils? Whose job is it to do this?  (These readings are in the red course notes)

  1. I believe that the use of Big Data should be managed by those people who receive and manage Big Data every day. These people include Search Engines and Social Networking sites. The way in which they should manage the data is through putting in public regulations, which they and others must abide by, as to what the data can be used for. These regulations must include the protection of people and their ethical right to privacy and the use of the data that matches this right.

It is the job of the search engines and social networking sites to do this because through creating these portals they have created means to collect big data. So it is their duty to protect people from the perils of big data and what they have created.

Outside of these organisations regulators of companies and users of big data should also be put in place to make sure that these organisations continue to use big data in the appropriate set out way. This way the promise of big data will always be upheld and users wont have to worry about the perils.

  2. The use of Big Data should be regulated by standards that are outlined and enforced by the government of the region where the data is stored. The data that has been collected should have a purpose and that purpose be clearly portrayed to the contributor of the information.

The ownership of the data should remain that of the public, or if that cannot be managed then public interests should be a high priority of those who manage and have big data to ensure owners and users avoid the perils of big data.

  3. Big Data should be governed by the laws where the Data is stored. It should be managed well by those who receive the data on a day-to-day basis.

Those who manage the data have a big responsibility to keep all the data private so that they do not breach any privacy violations. Using the data for personalization must be consented and used to a limit where the business will not be controlling what a consumer sees and products suggested based on their activity.
